In 1972, the central Police office was leased out to a residence in Gilgit. Honorable Captain Muhammad Babar khan (Hero of the struggle of Independence of Gilgit-Baltistan) assumed responsibility as the first AIG in 1972. Later on in 1974, Mr. Abdul Hameed Khawar was assigned as AIG Police. On his retirement, Colonel Mir Wali, a native of Ghizer, was assigned as AIG Police. At that time, the functions of the inspector General of Police were handled by the Deputy Commissioner. This arrangement lasted until 1975. In 1975, the number of Gilgit-Baltistan Police was roughly 218.

Gilgit Baltistan Police Roll No Slip 2023
The appointment of Inspector General of Police was launched by the Ministry of Home affairs on 01-10-1975 and Mr. Sidique Suleiman (PSP) assumed responsibility as the first IGP. Thus the leadership of the Police passed to the Inspector General of Police. The Skardu District was likewise formed in 1975 and SP was assigned to manage it. In 1976, the two districts of Ghizer and Ghanche were created and 138 Policeman were recruited for the region.

But in 1982, the distinct status of Ghizer and Ghanche Districts was dissolved and absorbed in to Gilgit and Skardu Districts respectively.

So aside from the SPs, the soldiers were assigned to the former areas. Later, in 1988, the existence of distinct districts of Ghizer and Gangche was restored. Astore District and Hunza-Nagar District were founded in 2005 and 2009 respectively. In years 2015, Khurrmang, Shigar and Hunza were also awarded District Status.
