In 1990, a group of practising architects, artists, and designers came together to create the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) in Karachi. They saw a need for an elite institution that taught students about all aspects of the creative industries. The IVS is an international, nonprofit institution for the advancement of architectural and design education.

A candidate’s potential in the creative fields can be gauged through the IVS Admissions Portfolio. Applicants to the IVS must demonstrate their unique perspective, artistic skills, and personal values in a portfolio submitted for consideration.

The Government of Sindh granted IVS a charter in June 1994, allowing it to operate autonomously and issue degrees on its own guidelines. To put it another way, it joined an exclusive group that includes just three other private universities in the nation in receiving this honour. Merit-based admission to the School is determined using a combination of an aptitude test, an interview process, and a weighting factor.
